Prim and his wife help the poor sick in a some small huts
they possess on the site that will later be occupied by
the former Hospital de la Santa Creu (Holy Cross
Hospital). - Early 11th century - The Hospital dels Mesells (Leper's Hospital) is founded by Bishop Torroja for those suffering from leprosy, under the protection of Saint Margaret. - Guitart founds a Hospital on the Baixada de la Canonja (near the Cathedral), which is later extended as a result of several donations:
Over the years, the hospital founded by Guitart is successively known as the Hospital de la Canonja (Canon House Hospital), the Casa Hospital de la Seu o de la Santa Creu (the See's Hospital, or Holy Cross Hospital), and then Hospital de Santa Eulàlia (Saint Eulalia's). - 12th century - Bernat Marcús founds a new hospital in Plaça de Marcús; the Augustinian Fathers of the Monastery of Santa Eulàlia del Camp found another hospital. - 1229 - Canon Colom founds a hospital in the Raval District, in what is now carrer de l'Hospital (Hospital Street). - 14th century - Pere Desvilar founds the Hospital de l'Almoina (Charity Hospital), also known as Hospital de Santa Marta (Saint Martha's). - February 1, 1401 - A petition was presented to the Consell de Cent (Council of a Hundred) of Barcelona, to join together all the different hospitals in the city. The Hospital de la Santa Creu was founded, merging the hospitals founded by Marcús, by Desvilar and by Colom on the site of Colom's hospital.
- February 13, 1401 - Construction begins on the Hospital de la Santa Creu, with Guillem Abiell as master builder. This was the only hospital in Barcelona for five centuries, until the early 20th century when it become insufficient for the city's rapidly growing population. |

| - March 25, 1629 - Work
started on construction of the Casa de Convalescència
(the House of Convalescence, now the National Library of
Catalonia), on the hospital's north wall. Work finished
in 1680, when it was dedicated to Saint Paul. This is why
it is also known as the Hospital de Sant Pau (Saint
Paul's). - 1764 - The Col.legi de Cirurgia (College of Surgeons, now the Academy of Medicine) was built opposite the Casa de Convalescència, and was designed by Ventura Rodríguez. |
